Gladys Marie Sheriff, 94, peacefully passed away Tuesday morning, March 7, 2017 at her home.
She was born May 30, 1922 to parents Joseph and Gunda (Jorgenson) Perry in Appleton, Minnesota. Gladys graduated as the 1940 class salutatorian from Madison High School. She worked as a business office manager for United Telephone, where she worked for over 17 years until retiring in 1984.
On Oct. 24, 1942, she married Russell Eugene Sheriff and they shared 43 wonderful years of marriage until he passed away in 1985.
Gladys was known for her delicious peanut brittle and everything she baked was delicious. She believed that the best way to cook a meal was to pick the dessert first! Other hobbies included reading, golfing, and ceramics. She will be remembered for her smile, dry sense of humor, and quick-wit.
She was a member of Presbyterian Church of Bellville for over 70 years and served as an elder. Gladys was also a member of the Clear Fork Chamber of Commerce, Altrusa International, the Red Cross Gray Ladies, the Bellville Flower Arrangers, Tune Twisters of the Home Demonstration Club in Bellville, and was a Cub Scout leader.
She is survived by daughter Candace Branham of Bellville; son and daughter-in-law John and Nadine Sheriff, of Frazeysburg; daughter-in-law Mary Sheriff, of Bellville; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren with one on the way; brother Don and Lona Perry, of Springfield; sister Jean Dill, of Bellville; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her loving husband, she was preceded in death by her son William J. “Bill” Sheriff, her son-in-law Danny Branham, her sister and brother-in-law Helen & Mike Blecharz, her brother-in-law Clinton Dill, and her parents.
Her family will receive friends 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, March 10, 2017 in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home (81 Mill Rd.). A memorial service honoring her life will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, March 11, 2017 in the Presbyterian Church of Bellville (118 Markey St.). Pastor Ron Walker will officiate and burial will follow at Bellville Cemetery.
