Retired Master Sargent Gerald A. VanAtta, 76, of Mansfield, passed away on July 20, 2015 at OhioHealth MedCentral Mansfield following an extended illness.
Jerry was born on December 22, 1938 in Akron, Ohio to Russel A. & Mary (Simmons) VanAtta. Jerry married the former Viola L. Stroh on April 4, 1992. He was retired from OSR/Manci where he worked for over twenty years as a guard and in supervision. Jerry had served for twenty five years in the U.S. Military including the U.S. Army and the 179th Air National Guard at Mansfield Lahm Airport where he retired as Master Sargent of transportation. He volunteered with the Navy Cadets and had received numerous awards and accommodations. Jerry enjoyed traveling with his wife, golfing, fishing and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife Viola; a step daughter Rose Marie (Joe) Wherkamp of Pennsylvania; step son Cliff Benson, (Donna) of Mansfield; five step grandchildren and seven step great grandchildren.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents and step daughter Barbara Torstick.
Burial will take place at a later date.
