George G. McElligott, 82, of Galion, died Friday, Aug. 19, 2016 after a long illness.
He was born in Chicago, Ilinois on June 11, 1934 to the late Garrett and Anne (Rohac) McElligott. He married his lovely wife, Carolyn D. Duffy, on Nov. 30, 1957 and is survived by her.
George grew up in Oak Park, Illinois and enjoyed summers on his uncle’s farm where he developed his love of gardening. He graduated Fenwick High School and went on to Purdue University, where he graduated with the class of 1954. He was a three-year All-American swimmer and earned a degree in electrical engineering while at Purdue.
George served in the U.S. Army before moving on to private business and lived with his family in Illinois, New Jersey and Pennsylvania before moving to Galion, Ohio in 1965. He was retired from ITT and North Electric as a Regional Sales Director.
George was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Galion and the Galion Elks Lodge BPOE #1191. He was proud to serve eight years on the Galion City School Board making a difference to the city’s youth, and on the Finance Council at his beloved church. George was large in stature and heart, had a strong faith, enjoyed gardening, had an ongoing thirst for learning, loved a good joke, and above all, loved spending time with his friends and family.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons Tim (Linda) McElligott, of Vienna, Virginia, Duff (Kara) McElligott, of New Berlin, Wisconsin, Terry (Beth) McElligott, of Indian Springs, Ohio, and Kevin (Michele) McElligott, of Galion; and his daughter, Denise (Chip) Higgins, of Amelia, Ohio.
He was Papa George to 14 grandchildren: Julia McElligott, Katie McElligott, Garrett McElligott, Mary McElligott, Matt McElligott, Michael McElligott, Max McElligott, Kelly McElligott, Chris McElligott, Laura McElligott, Jack McElligott, Elliott Higgins, Connor Higgins, and Casey Higgins.
Friends may call Friday, Aug. 26, 2016, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Mark A. Schneider Funeral Home, 303 Portland Way N., Galion. A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2016, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church of Galion, with Fr. Paul A. Fahrbach, Celebrant.
Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Galion, where military honors will be conducted by the Galion Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.
