Emma Mae Shaum, 93, of Ontario, passed away late Thursday evening, Nov. 29, 2018, at Elmcroft of Ontario.

She was born at home on the family farm on Feb. 22, 1925, in Blacklick, Ohio, to the late Walter William and Frances (Summerfield) Darst.

On June 25, 1941, she married James H. Shaum at First English Lutheran Church in Mansfield. She was a stay at home mom, caring for her three sons as well as numerous foster children. Emma was very involved in her children’s activities and volunteered as a Cub Scout den mother for several years. She was a member of the Mother’s Club at Ontario Schools.

After her children were grown, she became the owner of Mode O Day, a women’s apparel store in the mall. After her retirement, she and Jim retreated to Florida to enjoy the winter.

Emma is survived by two sons and three daughters-in-law, Jim and Melinda Shaum, Jerry and Laura Shaum and Toni Shaum, all of Ontario; ten grandchildren, David (Dawn) Shaum, April (Anthony) Cindric, Lee Ann (Jerod) Them, Jeremy (Tara) Shaum, Nathan (Carrie) Shaum, Jenn (Rick) Forsythe, Collin (Becky) Shaum, Benjamin Shaum (fiancée, Stacy Shumate), Amelia Shaum, and Nicholas Nagel; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great granddaughter.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Harvey Shaum on Aug. 4, 2012; son, Mark Shaum, who passed away 10 hours prior to her; brother, Jerry Darst; and sister, Minnetta Poe.

The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2018, at First English Lutheran Church, 53 Park Avenue West, Mansfield. The funeral service conducted by Pastor Andrew Jones will follow at 11 a.m. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Mansfield Memorial Park.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or a charity of the donor’s choice. The Ontario Home of Wappner Funeral Directors is privileged to serve the family.
