Emily Louise (Julius) Renock, 93, died September 23, 2017 at Mill Creek Nursing and Rehab, Galion.

A resident for the past seven years at Magnolia Terrace in Galion, she sustained a hip fracture a week earlier and was being treated following surgery.

Born June 26, 1924 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Haydn and Eleanor (Sherrer) List. Emily was baptized Oct. 12, 1924 at Bethany Lutheran Church in East Liberty, Pennsylvania. She attended Sterrett and Linden schools and Peabody High School in Pittsburgh and in 1942 graduated with honors from Arnold High School, Arnold, Pennsylvania.

During WWII she was a spectrographer’s assistant in Alcoa Testing Laboratories in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, and Torrance, California. A devoted and loving mother, she was active in the PTA in Lower Burrell, Pennsylvania as well as Bethesda Lutheran Church singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school.

Moving to Galion in 1959, she continued to be a Cub Scout Den mother for nine years, was active in the Miriam Circle at First Lutheran Church, and was a member of Church Women United serving as president in 1972. 

A member of Twig 2 of the Galion Community Hospital, she served as secretary and did in-service duty with the “Comfort Cart” for 27 years and delivered Meals on Wheels for 25 years. She was also a loving caregiver for her granddaughters. She enjoyed being busy around the house, painting and gardening in addition to making scrapbooks and photo albums.

Her scrapbooks featuring members of each of her sons’ graduating classes have been popular at class reunions for many years.

Emily’s travels took her to visit a life-long pen pal in England; and to San Juan, Puerto Rico; Igualada, Spain and a tour to Israel. She also spent several years with her son’s family in Costa Mesa, California. In 1975, Emily and her husband opened their home to a Cambodian refugee family. The family, now living in Oregon, affectionately call her “Grandma.” Emily also enjoyed visiting relatives around the country. 

On Jan. 14, 1944, she married Jay Renock at Calvary Lutheran Church, Arnold, Pennsylvania. Jay died Oct. 28, 1987.

Emily is survived by loving sons and daughters-in-law: John Jay (Rebecca “Becky” Longstreth), of Galion; Richard James (Deborah Fair), of Painesville; and Thomas Joseph (Lorraine DeRose), of Tustin, California; cherished granddaughters Amy Lynn, Columbus; Tara Ann (Randy Roth), of Brighton, Michigan; Rachel Christine (Jason Hula), of Ravenna; Leslie Ann, of Painesville; Kathleen Denise (Darrell Carbajal), of San Diego, California, and Melissa Suzanne (Ryan Puorro), Arden-Arcade near Sacramento, California. Great grandchildren include James Roth and Adria Roth of Brighton, MI, Aiden Hula and Grace Hula, of Ravenna, Derek Carbajal and Ava Carbajal of San Diego, California.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, James Haydn Julius who was killed in action in Germany, March 3, 1945.

On Saturday, Oct. 7, 2017, friends may call from 9 to 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 127 S. Columbus Street, Galion, followed by services at 11 a.m. Burial will follow in Crawford County Memory Gardens, Crestline.
