Edward J. Doup, 84, of Bellville passed away Saturday, January 25, 2014 in Country Meadow Care Center, surrounded by his loving family following an extended illness.
The son of Howard H. and Helen M. (Strater) Doup, Ed was born on April 25, 1929 in Mt. Vernon. After graduating from Mt. Vernon high school, Ed served in the U.S. Army, 1st Infantry (The Big Red 1), and was stationed in Germany during the Korean War.
Ed was a commercial master plumber and pipefitter, working out of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local 42, in Norwalk. After retiring, for a couple of years, Ed also taught basic plumbing at North Central State College.
Ed loved being surrounded by his family during the holidays. Quite the competitor, Ed enjoyed playing euchre with his children and grandchildren, and made sure to take pride in each of his victories.
Ed enjoyed farming, as well as his antique international tractor “Big Red”. Having an appreciation for classic cars, Ed worked to restore his 1936 Buick and 1924 Chevy pickup truck.
For many years, Ed served as service officer for the Bellville American Legion Post #535 and was also a member of the Bellville Amvet’s Post #43.
Quick-witted, Ed loved to joke with family and friends, and always had a twinkle in his eye.
He is survived by his children and their spouses, Carolyn and Bill Brook of Bellville, Donna and John Moore of Lewisville, Texas, Ron and Rebecca Doup of Bellville, George Doup of Bellville, Ina and Dennis Flenner of Lucas, and Phyllis and Mike Patterson of Bellville; grandchildren Jessica and Brian Meade of Johnstown, Tami and Bill Mowery of Fredericktown, Joey Pocs of Bellville, Lance and Jody Patterson of California, Sean and Holley Moore of Texas, Andrew and Kristina Brook of Bellville, Brandon and Amy Doup of North Liberty, Amy Doup of Gahanna , Amber Doup of Cleveland, Nick Doup of South Carolina, Donald and Nikki Traxler of Bellville, Adriann and Andrew Gribben of Texas, and Michael David and Becky Brook of Tennessee; twelve great grandchildren; sisters and brother-in-law Carol and Dick Donavon, Joyce Sultz, and brother George R. Doup; sisters-in-law Velma Carpenter, Edna Dodge, and Ellen Tablett; along with numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
Along with his parents he was preceded in death by his loving wife Sylvia Doup who passed away on February 14, 2012; sisters Eileen Coogle, Jean Clutter; granddaughters Brittany Doup and Tori Brook; sister-in-law Marlene Doup and brother-in-law Wally Sultz.
The family will receive friends Friday, January 31, 2014 from 5-8pm in the Bellville Snyder Funeral Home where funeral services will be held Saturday at 11 am. Pastor Richard Prater will officiate. Military honors will be performed by the Bellville American Legion Post #535. Burial will follow in Bellville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Jefferson Township-Bellville Rescue Squad, Diabetes Association, or Hospice of North Central Ohio may be made through the funeral home.
