Earl “Butch” Smith

Some men are focused and determined, some lead and teach, others build, fix, and repair, a yet others offer a helping hand in time of need. Earl Smith held all of those attributes. Even during his last days, Earl kept working…..he simply never gave up.

Earl “Butch” Smith, 73, of Bellville passed away Friday, June 3 2016 in University Hospital Chicago due to complications from mesothelioma.

The son of Frank and Leona (Daugherty) Smith, Earl was born in Mansfield on May 8, 1943. On July 18, 1964 he married Sherry Waltz.

For 31 years he worked as an electrician for General Motors. A dependable employee, Butch could fix or repair just about anything.

In his younger years Butch enjoyed coon hunting and riding motorcycles, especially hare scramble racing.

If you couldn’t find Earl he’d probably be on a tractor. Butch loved bailing hay and worked numerous fields in the area. Boasting a refined palate, Earl appreciated a well cooked meal and usually offered “constructive criticism” to each dish. He loved to eat and appreciated home cooked meals.

Having a gruff exterior, Butch’s sensitive side was also evident. As a husband he praised Sherry’s homemade recipes. As father he was available to plow a driveway or complete a home project, and as grandpa Butch proudly encouraged his grandkids to do their best.

Along with his wife Sherry Smith he is survived by children Rich (Lisa) Smith, Dale (Sherry) Smith, and Michelle (Jeff) Brokaw, all of Bellville; grandchildren Brittany Smith & Dustin Thomas, Shelbi Brokaw and Austin Boyd, KayLee (Jason) Boyles, Nathan Smith, Chesney Smith, Jacob Lowe, and Nick Brokaw; great grandchildren Cole, Rylee, and Benjamin; siblings Dan (Deb) Smith ,of Butler, Lee (Loretta) Smith, of Bellville, Elmer Smith, of Butler, Alfred (Linda) Smith, of Mansfield, Sandra Bowman, of Bellville, Gladys Beal, of Mansfield; sister-in-law Norma Smith, of Bellville; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
