Dr. Donald Emerson Hale Jr., 83, of Mansfield (formerly of Shelby) died Dec. 3, 2017, at his home.

He was born May 17, 1934, in Rochester, Minnesota to Dr. Donald E. and Marian (Pomroy) Hale.

Don was a 1952 graduate of Shaker Heights High School, received his undergraduate degree at Miami University, and completed dental school at Case Western Reserve University. While at Miami University, he met Sara, his wife of 57 years.

Don also served his country as a dentist in the United States Air Force from 1964 to 1966, before opening his family practice in Shelby; he retired from dentistry in 2008.

Don enjoyed playing golf with his friends and was a very talented musician, playing numerous instruments. He played the bagpipes for the Royal Scots Highlanders and the trumpet for the Ribticklers Dixieland Jazz Band. He also belonged to SAC and to the Shelby County Club.

He had numerous hobbies including handball, bicycling and skeet shooting. Don enjoyed family vacations, especially when they included his grandchildren. He always looked forward to music camp trips with his brothers, Ed and Brad.

Survivors include his wife Sara (Burnett) Hale, whom he married Aug. 15, 1959; son Kevin (Meredith) Hale, of Woodstock, Georgia; daughters Kathy (Eric) Louttit, of Brecksville, Ohio, Cary (Robert) Carcione, of Ontario, Ohio, and Sally Giefer, of Lexington, Ohio; grandchildren Elizabeth Hale, Megan and Sara Louttit, Jane and Ty Carcione, Sheldon White and Clara and Lydia Giefer, and one brother Edward (Lynn) Hale, of Muncie, Indiana.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers Bradford and Malcolm Hale.

A private family celebration will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers memorial contribution may be sent to The Mansfield Symphony Youth Orchestra or to The Renaissance Theatre at 138 Park Avenue West Mansfield, Ohio 44902-1607.
