Darlene Lucile Meehan

MANSFIELD: For Darlene Meehan, the garden was a love song – a duet between her spirit and Mother Nature. The flowers she grew in her garden, both common and exotic varieties, were timed to look their best when she needed to cut them and style them for arrangements in annual competitions at the Richland County Fair. She was a skilled floral designer and annually won awards for her work. Darlene Meehan was an artist – flowers and plants were her medium – the soil and the sky were her canvas.

Darlene is at rest, as she passed away early Thursday, July 8, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. She was 76.

Born Darlene Lucile Burton February 24, 1945 in Mansfield to parents Frank and Thelma (Hockenberry) Burton, she was graduated from Mansfield Senior High School, and remained a lifelong resident.

She worked 30 years for the City of Mansfield, and retired as Superintendent of the City Park Department.

Darlene was a member of PEO and Mansfield Garden Club. She was serious about her garden club activities: to ensure the club’s Christmas tree at Kingwood Center was stunning, Darlene bought her own flocking machine - kept in her garage – to make sure the tree was a winter spectacle. Described as “very creative,” there was no craft too tough to tackle! In addition to her own gardens, Darlene beautified Mansfield by working on gardens in the city square, and she formerly served on the Park Board.

She is survived by her beloved family, her son Frank (Susan) Basting of Columbus; granddaughter Judith Basting of Baltimore; niece Kim (Kevin) Allgood of Oak Park, IL, nephew Eric (Renee) Bosko of Florida; stepchildren Kevin (Andrea) Meehan of Mansfield, Dawn Meehan of Florida, and Catherine (Kenneth) Lohr of Cape Coral, FL; five step grandchildren; grandnephews and grandnieces Nathaniel Allgood, Violet Allgood, Carmen Bosko, Sydney Bosko, Brandon Bosko; great-niece and great-nephews Aubrey, Ayden and Cash; and her spoiled Schnauzer companions Ginger and Emma.

She was preceded in death by her husband Edward Meehan; and her sister Donna Bosko.

Her family will receive friends Thursday, July 15, 2021 from 4 to 7 p.m. in the Finefrock Chapel of the Marion Avenue Snyder Funeral Home, where her funeral will be held Friday July 16 at 1 p.m.  Celebrant Dave Roberts will officiate. Burial will follow in Mansfield Memorial Park.

Memorial Contributions to Humane Society of Richland County may be made at the funeral home.
