Carl T. Payton, 75, of Mansfield, passed away Wednesday, September 16, 2015 at Ohio Health MedCentral Mansfield Hospital.
Carl was born April 19, 1940 in Portsmouth, Ohio. He graduated in 1958 from Portsmouth East High School, where he was a very gifted athlete, excelling in football and baseball. He really enjoyed going to his class reunions to see all his friends and tell stories.
He retired from ARMCO Steel in 1995 after 31 years of service. Carl enjoyed hunting and being in the woods. He loved the ocean and walking in the water. He never met a stranger. He loved to quiz people to see if he might know any of their family, and most of the time he did.
Carl is survived by a son, Todd (Holly) Payton; three step-grandchildren, Carlie, John, and Jim; three step-great-grandsons, DJ, Gunner, and JC; two nephews, Tom Payton and Randy Payton; one niece, Tina Keen; one sister-in-law, Mary Payton; many cousins; life-long friend and companion, Judy Fields; and many special friends.
Carl was preceded in death by one brother, Walter “Coonie” Payton; and one sister, Polly Haefeli.
Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, September 26, 2015 at Werner-Gompf Funeral Services, LTD., 1106 Park Avenue East, Mansfield, OH. Funeral services will follow at 1 p.m. with Pastor Herman Copley officiating.
