MANSFIELD — A female employee sustained serious burns in an accident Friday at AK Steel’s Mansfield Works, 913 Bowman St., according to the Mansfield Fire Department.

Asst. Chief Mike Sieving said the fire department was called at 5:12 p.m. He said the initial report was an explosion in the plant’s melt shop with multiple injuries.

He said the fire was almost completely extinguished when firefighters arrived. The injured employee was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.

“We send a full response and threw all the rescue trucks we had just to be sure,” Sieving said.

“The steel mill personnel were doing what they do very well in assessing the damage. We really did not have to do anything with regards to the fire,” Sieving said.

The assistant chief said he didn’t know if the accident was actually an explosion. A representative of AK Steel said that the company is working to determine the cause.

The victim was being evaluated at OhioHealth Mansfield as of 7 p.m.

“We can confirm that there was a reaction at a furnace at Mansfield Works a little after 5 p.m. this evening,” Lisa H. Jester, corporate manager of communications and public relations for AK Steel, said in an email.

This is an ongoing story and will updated.
