CHIPPEWA TOWNSHIP – A Youngstown woman died Tuesday afternoon in a four-vehicle crash on State Route 585, north of State Route 94 in Chippewa Township, Wayne County.

Karlene D. Rantamaki, 34, was pronounced deceased at the scene and three others were transported to area hospitals, according to a press release from the Ohio Highway Patrol.

An initial investigation revealed Rantamaki was driving southbound on SR-585 around 4 p.m. when she drove left of center, sideswiping two vehicles that were traveling northbound, the release said. Her vehicle then continued to slide sideways across the centerline and was struck on the right side by the fourth vehicle.

The three individuals who were transported to area hospitals were in the fourth vehicle, a blue 2016 Chevrolet Equinox driven by Michael R. Zimmerman, 34, of Cross Junction, Virginia.

Mr. Zimmerman and his front seat passenger, Abigail E. Zimmerman were transported by Chippewa Township Fire Department to Akron General Hospital. Their son was transported by Rittman Fire Department to Akron Children’s Hospital.

The drivers of the two other vehicles were not injured, according to the release. Terry A. Barnes of Akron was the driver of the second vehicle, a silver 2015 Honda Pilot. The third vehicle involved was a blue 2017 Subaru Legacy driven by Adam J. Graham of Akron.

Rantamaki had been driving a blue 2001 Chevrolet Malibu.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Reconstruction Unit, Wayne County Coroner’s Office, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted on scene.

At this time, alcohol does not seem to be a factor in this crash. All drivers and passengers were using their seatbelts at the time of the incident.

The crash remains under investigation.
