MANSFIELD — A 40-year-old Mansfield man sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound on New Years’s Day after a reported argument outside the former Walnut Restaurant & Lounge, according to Mansfield police.

Police responded to 111 N. Walnut St. at 1:08 p.m. after receiving a call that someone had been shot, according to a police department press release Wednesday evening.

Patrol officers found Kenneth McCall, 40, who told police he had been shot outside the place of occurrence. McCall was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital.

Witnesses told police that they had heard several shots and saw a white car speed away from the area. Witnesses said McCall was in a verbal argument with the driver of the white car prior to being shot.

A search warrant was served on the building at 111 and 113 N. Walnut St. and evidence was collected from the building. A vehicle was also seized from the location and taken into evidence, police said.

Detectives are continuing to follow up on leads and talk to witnesses. Anyone with information regarding the shooting can contact Det. Rick Clapp at 419-755-9470 or Det. Ronee Swisher at 419-755-9432.

The building was formerly the Walnut Restaurant & Lounge, according to Lt. Robert Skropits. A Facebook page for The Walnut Banquet Hall and Event Center was created in February 2019 for the same address.

One street over on Wednesday afternoon, the investigation continued outside of Martini’s On Main at 108 N. Main Street. Police requested to view security footage from the bar when a splattering of blood was discovered on the sidewalk out front.

“There is some blood on the sidewalk, so we believe this may have been involved,” Skropits said. “He may have been over here, we’re just trying to start to put the pieces together. Until we can collect evidence and do what needs to be done, we’re roping off where we believe some of this happened.”
