CHESTER TOWNSHIP – A Polk man was killed Monday morning in a Wayne County crash on U.S. 250, according to the Wooster Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Russell Nowell, 63, of Polk, was pronounced dead at the scene in the two-vehicle incident at approximately 10:36 a.m. just east of Rathburn Road in Chester Township, the Patrol stated.

The driver of the other vehicle, Steven E. Swafford, 64, of Homer Michigan, was transported by Wooster Township Fire Department to Wooster Community Hospital. He was later transported by Metro Life Flight to Akron City Hospital.

According to the Patrol, the crash involved a blue 2010 Chevrolet Suburban driven by Swafford, and a red 2004 Chevrolet Colorado driven by Nowell.

Initial investigation revealed Swafford was westbound on US-250. Nowell was traveling eastbound on US-250. Nowell drove left of center striking Swafford’s vehicle head on. Both vehicles traveled off the north side of the roadway after impact.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol Reconstruction Unit, Wayne County Coroner’s Office, Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ohio Department of Transportation assisted on scene.

Alcohol does not seem to be a factor in this crash. Swafford was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. The crash remains under investigation.
