Former Mansfield police Chief Lawrence E. "Bunk" Harper

MANSFIELD -- The new Mansfield Police Department shooting range/training facility will be dedicated on Friday in honor of its longest serving chief.

The public is invited to attend the 1:30 p.m. event at the Chief Lawrence E. Harper Training Facility on Miller Parkway, west of Mansfield Lahm Regional Airport.

Mayor Tim Theaker said FOP Lodge #32 suggested the name of the new $44,000 outdoor facility.

Harper became Mansfield's first black police officer in 1948, after serving in the U.S. Marines Corp during World War II, and the city's first black police chief in 1990.

Harper retired in 2002 after 12 years as chief, passing away in 2016 at age 89.

To reach the training site, take Harrington Memorial Road, turning left on Cairns Road and then right on Airport West Road. Attendees should then turn right on Crawl Road, left on Reid and then right on Miller Parkway.
