MANSFIELD — A Mansfield police officer, acting in self defense, shot and killed two pit bulls Thursday morning, according to an investigation report.

The department was contacted in reference to two pit bulls that attacked a property owner’s cat on the 300 block of Muth Road at 7:22 a.m.

“(The cat owner) further advised that the pit bulls then attempted to attack her,” officer Jordan Moore wrote in a report narrative.

When police arrived, they saw the canines in the rear of a nearby Arlington Avenue residence.

“This officer only made it to the side of the residence when both pit bulls started growling and came running at this officer,” Thomas wrote. “This officer then fired his shotgun, striking both dogs, resulting in their death.”

Following the shooting, police made contact with a witness who said the officer had no choice but to shoot the dogs. Four shotgun shells were collected from the scene, according to the report.

The dog owner, who lives about a mile away on Garfield Place, arrived and took possession of his dogs, the report said.
