MANSFIELD -- A Mansfield police officer fatally shot a sword-wielding man early Wednesday morning on Poplar Street, according to a department press release.
Police responded at 5:46 a.m. to 275 Poplar St. when residents called to complain about a man causing a loud disturbance outside their apartment window, breaking the window.
The residents also advised the man was still outside the apartment and they continued to hear glass break.
Officers tried to make contact with the man, who was in an adjacent apartment.
"The subject opened the door and directly came at an officer with a sword," police said. "This immediately escalated the confrontation and resulted in the subject being fatally shot."
Police said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has been requested to investigate the shooting.
Officer Nolan Goodman, a four-year veteran of the MPD, did the shooting and has been placed on administrative leave, per department policy.
Police said the the identity of the man killed is being withheld pending notification of family.
