Ohio State Highway Patrol car

MANSFIELD -- A Mansfield man was seriously injured in a Thursday night crash involving a Yamaha motorcycle and a Chevy Impala in Mifflin Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Nathaniel A. Speelman, 29, of Mansfield, was driving a Yamaha motorcycle when he collided with a Chevy Impala driven by Derek E. Knowlton, 31, of Ashland at approximately 9:49 p.m. on US Route 30 at County Road 1095 in Ashland County, the Patrol stated.

Speelman, who was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, suffered life-threatening injuries, the Patrol reported. Knowlton, 31, of Ashland, was not injured.

According to the Patrol, a 2001 Yamaha Motorcycle was traveling westbound on US Route 30 when a 2012 Chevrolet, traveling from eastbound US Route 30 onto County Road 1095, turned in front of the motorcycle. The driver of the motorcycle was ejected onto westbound lanes. The Chevrolet then caught fire and became fully engulfed.

US Route 30 was closed for approximately 90 minutes while the crash was being investigated.

Other agencies assisting at the crash scene were: The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office and Hayesville and Mifflin Township Fire and EMS.

Speed appears to be a factor in the crash. The crash is still currently under investigation.
