MANSFIELD -- A Mansfield man who shot a Richland County Sheriff's deputy on Thursday night was then killed by a second deputy, according to Maj. Joe Masi.
Deputy Michael Pawlikowski was shot by Craig Wright, 60, 1116 Lexwood Road, after authorities were asked by an out-of-town family member to do a "wellness check" on the man, Masi said.
In an emailed press release Friday morning, Masi said Deputy Justin Ady returned fire after Pawlikowski was shot Thursday around 11:16 p.m.
The press release didn't indicate what led up to the exchange of gunfire.
Lexwood Road is south of Mansfield, west of Lexington Avenue and north of Hanley Road.
Wright and the two deputies were transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital. Wright died at the hospital, Masi said. The extent of the deputies' injuries was not released, though Ady was not wounded in the exchange of gunfire.
After the shooting, Masi said a search warrant was prepared, signed and executed for the residence. Sheriff Steve Sheldon asked the Ohio Bureau of Investigation and Identification to process the scene and conduct an investigation into the shooting.
Both deputies were placed on administrative leave for eight days per department policy, Masi said.
