MANSFIELD — The Department of Fire will hold a live stream event to honor four members of the Mansfield Fire Department on Tuesday, Dec. 29 at 2 p.m.

These members will be presented with the Bronze Star award for their actions during a heroic rescue.

The Mansfield Fire Department will be hosting the live-streamed award ceremony via The Mansfield Fire Department IAFF Local 266 Facebook page. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, limited attendance and social distancing will be enforced.

Due to these restrictions, family members and members of the news source will not be permitted to attend in person. However, the live-streamed event will be open to anyone via Facebook.

The event will honor and award, Captain Daniel Krizan, Firefighter Phil Atwell, Probationary Firefighter Hunter Shoup and Probationary Firefighter Jared Hagen. On Friday Dec. 11, 2020, The Mansfield Fire Department was dispatched for a furnace fire at AK Steel. Upon arrival, units found a fire in a furnace and alerted to one person trapped in a crane unit in the facility.

The above crew navigated multiple staircases and catwalk paths in zero visibility conditions due to heavy smoke. The crew was able to locate the trapped person and assist him in wearing a self-contained breathing apparatus.

The crew then led the person back down and out of the facility. The patient was then treated and transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Due to the dangerous conditions and the successful operations of the crew, The Mansfield Fire Department Awards Committee has chosen to honor the four members above with the distinguished Bronze Star.
