VaunDoom releases new album

Local hip-hop ‘VaunDoom,’ is releasing his latest project: a 15-track album called, “This Thing I’ve Built.”
Vaughn Robinson, also known as ‘VaunDoom’ Robinson is a Mansfield resident and graduate of Lexington High School. “This Thing I’ve Built” is his 19th album. The album was developed entirely by Robinson: from production, to writing, to recording.

He explained the formula for how he makes a track. He starts with the beats. Then he writes. And after that’s done, he records. Repeat. And he doesn’t listen to other music when he’s crafting his pieces. Although he’s a student of hip-hop, he wants a style that is 100% authentic and original.

The Mansfield rapper is pleased with how this album turned out.  He said it sounds gorgeous–with a very silky tone. Robinson also thinks “This Thing I’ve built” is his best lyrical project, too. A number of the songs flow like poetry. And no line is wasted. Robinson said the record is more reflective in nature than some of his other music.

The material for “This Thing I’ve Built” is based largely on his own life experiences. Robinson hopes to inspire fans of hip-hop and other creators with his work, whether through the beats, rhymes or life messages. And he’s excited to see if the rap nerds out there will catch all the cool wordplay.

Robinson wants to take his talents as an independent artist as far as possible and that’s why he sees “This Thing I’ve Built” as a pivotal moment. He’s using all my talents to maximize his brand, in the hopes to make it a worldwide success.

He’s forming a blueprint for the journey, and hopes everything will work out. Time will tell. But Robinson doesn’t have time to wait. Even with 19 albums under his belt, he’s already looking ahead to his next project.

He’s collaborating with fellow artist and friend, Paul AKA Lupasan. He has an EP in the works, too–which will be a bit more bleak than “This Thing I’ve Built.”

He also has a web comic, which he plans to release soon. He’s working on developing his YouTube and Twitch brands, as well. His own brand aside, Robinson believes there is a plethora of local music talent in the area that needs to be showcased more often.

But, the talent outweighs the platform and opportunity. He said it’s vital that we support local talent as much as we can.

You can support VaunDoom by purchasing “This Thing I’ve Built” which is now available on Bandcamp, and his clothing line Divine Might. We’ll include links to those in our shownotes.

Ashland’s Beattie had important botany career

Now, some local history. Did you know that Ashland-born, Rolla Kent Beattie was an important botanist and plant pathologist?

He attended Cotner University and the University of Nebraska before becoming a teacher in Colorado and Wyoming before heading further west to be a professor at Washington State College.

He’d go on to work for the Federal Horticultural Board, the Bureau of Plant Industry at the Department of Agriculture and was involved in the development of plant inspection procedures.

Mifflin Council intrigue

Next, An update from an earlier story: Mifflin Councilwoman Joyce Amos has been suspended from the Village Council. That was Philene Craig, a newly elected councilwoman, moving to suspend Councilwoman Joyce Amos at the Mifflin Village Council meeting last week.

She claimed Amos had been engaging in disorderly conduct, namecalling Mifflin Residents on Facebook.

Craig, who happens to be the wife of Fred Craig, also claimed misfeasance. For those of you who missed it: Fred Craig was criminally charged with menacing by stalking on Dec. 15. He was arrested and jailed Jan. 5.

He thought the arrest was part of a plot to remove him from the council. Though Fred never learned who filed the complaint, he was told the victim in question was none other than Joyce Amos. Now Amos herself has been suspended from the village council.

Philene’s motion passed, 4-2, with council members Amos and Pam Crain dissenting.

Of course, given the already existing tension between Amos and the Craigs, the question of conflict of interest is one to consider. By state law, Amos is allowed a hearing date. It’s been scheduled to occur Feb. 10, the village’s next regularly scheduled meeting. She won’t be able to exercise her council privileges and responsibilities until that date.

Sandra Kay Downs
