SHELBY -- The Shelby Cycle Historical Society recently was approved by the IRS as a tax exempt 501(c)3 and is now taking applications for membership.

The society is dedicated to preserving the memory of a vital part of Shelby’s history and significant source of commerce in the 20th Century – the bicycle industry. Members don’t have to own a Shelby bicycle to join.

The society meets at 6:30 p.m. the last Monday of the month in the Bavin Room at Marvin Memorial Library. New members receive a founding member T-shirt depicting the Shelby Whippet bike that Clarence “Whippet” Wagner rode cross country to set a record in 1927.

The group is looking for members to help plan activities in 2018, including some Shelby Bicycle Days events. For more information, go to, or email
