MOUNT VERNON -- A Fredericktown girl was killed in a Saturday afternoon crash in Liberty Township, according to the Mount Gilead Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Leah M. Staton, 17, of Fredericktown was pronounced dead at the scene of a two-vehicle crash, the Patrol reported.

The incident took place at approximately 5:53 p.m. on New Delaware Road (County Road 2) at Tucker Road (Township Road 121) in Knox County.

According to the Patrol report, Staton was driving a 2012 silver Chevrolet Impala southbound on Tucker Road. Alex J. Kelley, 23, of Mount Vernon, was driving a 2005 gold Chrysler 300 westbound on New Delaware Road.

The Patrol stated that Staton failed to yield from the stop sign and pulled into the intersection where she was struck by Kelley. Both vehicles continued off the south side of the roadway and Staton struck a utility pole.

Kelley sustained minor injuries from the crash.

Both drivers were wearing seat belts. Alcohol and drug usage are not suspected to be a factor in the crash.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted on scene by the Knox County Sheriff's Office, Mount Vernon Fire & EMS, and the Knox County Coroner's Office.

The crash remains under investigation.
