HURON COUNTY — A 58-year-old Vermilion man was killed Thursday morning in a two-vehicle crash that closed the intersection of U.S. 224 and Ohio 13 for a few hours.

According to the Norwalk Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at 5 a.m. in Greenwich Township.

Troopers said Jeffrey Lunsford, 58, of Vermilion, was driving a 2007 Toyota Corolla southbound on Ohio 13.

Matthew Smith, 32, of Bedford, Ohio was driving a 2018 Freightliner box truck, also southbound on Ohio 13, behind Lunsford.

Troopers said their preliminary investigation indicates Lunsford was stopped for a red light, when his car was struck from the rear by the truck.

Lunsford was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to troopers. Smith was not injured. He was wearing a seat belt, the patrol said.

Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Huron County Sheriff’s Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Tri-County Fire Department and Wilcox Towing.

This crash remains under investigation, the patrol said.
