CRAWFORD COUNTY — A Crawford County man, who allegedly fired at his wife’s vehicle on Tuesday afternoon, died in an officer-involved shooting in Kentucky early Thursday morning.

Timothy Gilbert, 43, 897 State Route 100, was sought by the Richland County Sheriff’s Office for felonious assault involving his wife near the intersection of Poth Road and Bowman Street.

According to a story on the WOWK-TV website, Kentucky State Police troopers spotted Gilbert’s van around 3 a.m. in Johnson County in a rural, northern section of the state.

Troopers attempted to pull Gilbert over to the side of the road, but he refused and a slow-speed pursuit began.

Gilbert allegedly drove into a yard and barricaded himself inside the van close to the Johnson-Martin County line. Gilbert had been on the phone with Johnson County dispatchers and told them he had guns inside the van.

An unspecified time later, shots were fired by troopers at the van, the television station reported. The man died on the scene from gunshots. No officers were hurt.

Troopers, who are continuing an investigation, said they were unsure what led up to shots being fired at the van, according to the story.

According to the Richland County Sheriff’s Office, Gilbert pulled behind his wife’s vehicle Tuesday on Poth Road at Bowman Street and allegedly shot at her vehicle with a 9mm handgun.

She fled the area and went to the Mansfield Police Department. She later told sheriff’s deputies she believed her husband was dangerous. She said Gilbert had told her he was not going back to prison and she believed he would be violent.

Deputies, who recovered shell casings at the local scene, obtained an arrest warrant charging Gilbert with felonious assault.

Due to seriousness of the event and the potential for others to be harmed, including law enforcement, the sheriff’s office issued a “be on the lookout for” for the vehicle Gilbert was driving and for him.

The sheriff’s office also asked for assistance from the Ohio State Highway Patrol and their Intelligence Hub to help locate both the vehicle and suspect. The sheriff’s office worked with several agencies in Ohio and Kentucky until Gilbert was located Thursday morning.
