AKRON – On Friday morning members of the Northern Ohio Violent Fugitive Task Force (NOVFTF) arrested Christopher Hastings, 32. Hastings has been wanted by the Portage County Sheriff’s Department since Monday evening for abduction and auto theft.
According to the Sheriff’s Department the victim, Larry Koerber, 73, was approached by Hastings and Margaret Hayes, 28, who were asking for a ride after they had been released from jail hours earlier. Koerber refused them a ride so Hastings stole the victim’s car and he and Haynes drove away.
Koerber’s wife, Donna, 72, was still inside the vehicle. Mrs. Koerber was located approximately three hours later by the side of the road in Franklin Township. She told officers that she had been pushed from the car.
The Portage County Sheriff’s Department worked with the NOVFTF to track down Hastings as soon as possible.
On Friday morning, members of the task force successfully located Hastings at the corner of Cole Ave and Moore St. in Akron. When officers attempted to arrest Hastings he fled. After a short foot pursuit he was arrested on the street. He will be taken to the Portage County jail and officers may look to file further charges since Hastings fled from officers.
“Our task force will work day and night until dangerous, violent fugitives such as this are taken off the streets,” U.S. Marshal Pete Elliott stated.
