Ohio State Highway Patrol car

WELLER TOWNSHIP -- A 14-year-old suffered serious injuries Thursday afternoon when the bicycle the teen was operating went left of center and collided with a car on Ohio 96.

According to the Mansfield Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the teen was riding a bicycle westbound on Ohio 96 in the eastbound lane around 3:40 p.m.

Troopers said the juvenile turned and went left of center and into the westbound lane in an attempt to turn off the road. The juvenile was struck by a westbound 2001 Buick Park Avenue, ejecting the teen.

The 14-year-old bicyclist, whose name was not released by troopers, was transported to OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital, troopers said.

The driver of the car, Pamela Watts, 58, of Mansfield was not injured. None of the three passengers in the vehicle --  Tony Esbenschade, 61, of Ashland, Louise Esbenschade, 84, of Ashland, and Josh Walker, 38, of Ashland -- were injured.

Franklin Township EMS responded to the scene and assisted. Ohio 96 was closed while the scene was cleared.

The crash remains under investigation, troopers said.
