ASHLAND COUNTY — A 31-year-old man was killed and four other people were injured Monday evening in a three-vehicle accident, according to the Ashland Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Troopers said the crash occurred on Ohio 545 in Clear Creek Township at 6:07 p.m.

Jesse Campbell of Oberlin was northbound on Ohio 545 when he attempted to pass another vehicle on a double yellow-marked section of the road, colliding head-on with a third vehicle, troopers said.

Campbell’s vehicle then collided with the vehicle it had tried to pass. Both vehicles went off the right side of the road with Campbell’s vehicle overturning.

The other vehicle involved in the head-on collision also overturned and went off the left side of the road.

Campbell, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Ashland County Coroner’s Office, troopers said.

The other driver in the head-on collision was transported OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital and later flown to Grant Medical Center in Columbus, where he was in serious condition Monday night. He was not identified in the state patrol press release. A passenger in that vehicle, also not yet identified, was taken to Ashland Community Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The driver and both passengers of  the vehicle Campbell tried to pass also sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash, troopers said. They were not identified by the patrol.

The Ashland County Coroner’s Office, Orange Township Volunteer Fire Department, Savannah Township Volunteer Fire Department, and deputies from the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office assisted troopers at the accident scene.

Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, according to troopers, who said the crash remains under investigation.
