SHELBY -- Summer will be more exciting in Shelby thanks to a collaborative effort between The Shelby Foundation and the Rotary Club of Shelby to bring a movie series to the downtown park.
Each year, during the Shelby Bicycle Days festival, Rotary sponsors the “Bike to Movie” event.
This event has been so popular that Rotary decided to extend the event from one movie to three thanks to a grant from The Shelby Foundation.
"The Bike-to-Movie event is always a big hit and since so much interest is on downtown revitalization, we thought community movie nights would be a driver for economic vitality,” Rotary Board Member Jake Penwell said.
The Shelby Foundation awarded a $2,800 grant to Rotary to support the movie series, and Civista Bank is the presenting sponsor.
Movies will take place in the Black Fork Commons on Fridays, June 14th (Trolls), July 12 (Christmas Movie) and Aug. 9 (Small Foot). A vendor will be on site to sell snow cones and Rotary will provide complimentary popcorn. Movies will kick off at dark.
This isn’t the first time these two organizations have worked together. The Foundation awarded the local club with a $2,500 grant to purchase gloves, hats, and scarves for elementary schools in the district for the “Warmth for Winter” project in 2016. Since then, each year, clothing supplies are replenished by the club.
Rotary International is a service organization whose stated purpose is to bring people together to take action to create lasting change in communities around the world.
