Mid-Ohio Jazz 1940s dance

The 1940s Mid-Ohio Jazz concert is on May 29.

MANSFIELD -- Mid Ohio Jazz will play host to its inaugural 1940's Dance which on Wednesday, May 29 at 7 p.m. at the Richland School of Academic Arts Auditorium located at 1456 Park Avenue West in Mansfield.

The event will feature the Mid Ohio Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Shawshank Big Band. The dance kicks off with a free dance lesson courtesy of the Olivewood Dance Instruction at 6:30 p.m. Live music and dancing from 7 until 9:30. Admission is free, 1940s attire is encouraged but not required.

Mid Ohio Jazz is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that strives to bring the community together through swing music. The organization is currently comprised of four ensembles, two of which will be presenting in performance at the dance. The Mid Ohio Youth Jazz Orchestra includes members from area schools including Galion, Ontario, Shelby, Foundation Academy, St. Pete and Ohio Virtual Academy.

The Shawshank Big Band is a community jazz ensemble featuring musicians with a variety of backgrounds including teachers, students, parents, pastors and retirees. Some members are making their return to performing after years away from music.

Both ensembles will be featuring music made famous by the great bands of the swing era including Count Basie, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Artie Shaw, Les Brown, Louie Prima and more.
