MANSFIELD — Pretest screenings are coming up for the 6th annual Mansfield-Richland County 3rd Grade Spelling Bee.

The bee is open to any first year third grade student in Richland County. Students can qualify through their school spelling bee or through the pretest screening.

The screening will take place Oct. 30 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the UMADAOP building, 215 Trimble Road in Mansfield.

Some schools in Richland County do not hold qualifier spelling bees for third graders. Students at these schools must attend the pretest screening in order to participate in the county spelling bee this spring.

Linda Burrage, the bee’s founder and coordinator, started the competition while working as a substitute teacher in the Mansfield City School district.

Burrage founded the bee to encourage an interest in literacy and help students prepare for 3rd grade state testing. She also wanted to create an event that could bring families and the community together.

“The spelling bee isn’t about winning or losing. It’s about literacy, community building and fostering the successful futures of these students,” Burrage said.
