Richland Source has compiled COVID-19 school reopening information for each school district. The following information was gathered through interviews with school officials and also from district websites. Plans are fluid and remain subject to change, based on state orders and local health information.

Gov. Mike DeWine on Tuesday, Aug. 4, issued a statewide order that all students in grades K-12 must wear facial coverings during in-class instruction.

School district: Clear Fork Valley Local Schools

Re-open dates: Aug. 31

Re-opening plan: Clear Fork will have in-person classes five days a week in grades K-12 under levels 1, 2 and 3. The school day will be five hours of instruction and a half hour for lunch.

Under level 4, all students will transition to remote learning from home.

In-class instruction: Yes

Virtual instruction option: Yes. Students who opt for full-time remote learning must commit to the entire semester.

School district: Crestview Local Schools

Re-open dates: Sept. 8

Re-opening plan: The district is preparing a plan that will allow students to attend classes five days a week with appropriate distancing and safety measures in place. Click here to read the full reopening plan

In-class instruction: Yes. These decisions are going to be made at the building levels, in tandem with input from building staff while in line with the most current safety guidelines in the next couple of weeks.

Virtual instruction option: The Crestview Online Academy will be available to all Crestview students, Kindergarten through 12th grades. It will operate separately from the in-class option, even if those who choose in-person instruction must pivot to an online setting.

Students who enroll in the Crestview Online Academy will have regular contact with school officials and will be able to select from a wide variety of elective courses.

All students enrolled in the academy will receive a Chromebook to use to complete their coursework.

School district: Discovery School

Re-open date(s): Sept. 8

Re-opening plan: Families are offered the option to choose full-time, in-person learning or full-time distance learning. Students will not be required to wear masks, though it will be recommended for grades 3 and up. All staff and teachers must wear facial coverings. Staff returns on Aug. 19 for three days of  International Baccalaureate training, followed by two weeks for teachers to prepare for high-quality distance learning and make necessary adjustments to in-person learning before students return.

Virtual instruction option: At-home learning will be supported by teachers, technology, and curriculum specifically built for online learning.

School district: Lexington Local Schools

Re-open dates: Sept. 8

Re-opening plan: Students will have face-to-face instruction at school five days a week while Richland County is under levels 1 through 3. At level 4, the district will revert to remote learning with Google Classroom, Schoology and Zoom. Students will join a live classroom led by the classroom teacher. 

In-class instruction: Yes.

Virtual instruction option: Lexington Digital Academy. Students will use an instructional software platform called Edgenuity. The district has been using this platform for its online students for six years. All courses are offered online, including electives. Students can learn at their own pace. There is no live instruction from Lexington teachers, but teachers will offer support if a student needs help. Enrollment deadline is Aug. 14.

School district: Lucas Local Schools

Re-open date(s): Aug. 24

Re-opening plan: The above reopening plan is subject to change based on state,regional, and/or local factors related to the pandemic.

In-class instruction:  Plan is tied to the state's four-step Public Health Advisory System with in-person classes at Levels One and Two, blended in-class and online at Level Three and online only if Richland County becomes Level 4. Per state orders, masks will be required for all students.

Virtual instruction option: Blended in-class and online when/if Richland County is deemed at Level Three. All learning becomes virtual if county becomes Level Four.

School district: Madison Local School District

Re-open dates: The first day of school for grades 1 to 10 is Aug. 26. Students in grades 11 and 12 will begin Aug. 27. Kindergarten and preschool will commence Sept. 8.

Re-opening plan: Madison’s reopening plan will correlate to the Ohio Public Health Advisory System. Five day per week in-person classes will be held for all students under Levels 1, 2 and 3. At Level 4, schools will close and the district will implement remote learning.

In-class instruction: Yes.

Virtual instruction option: Students can enroll in the Madison Online Academy through Aug. 7. Students participating in the MOA will work independently using an online curriculum and platform.

Re-opening plan: Students will attend in-person classes five days a week.

Re-open dates: Each grade has one day of orientation the week of Aug. 31, classes start Sept. 4

Re-opening plan: Classes will resume Sept. 4. At levels 1 and 2, classes will be in person for all students. At level 3, the district will operate on a modified schedule, with half the student body attending classes Mondays and Tuesdays and half attending Thursdays and Fridays. Students will have online assignments while not in school. At level 4, the district will transition to remote learning only.

Re-open dates: All students Pre-K to grade 12 will report to class with either in-person or virtual learning on Sept. 8.

School district: Ontario Local Schools

Re-open date(s): Grades 1-12, Aug. 19; Kindergarten, Aug. 21; Pre-school, Aug. 20

Re-opening plan: The plan mirrors the Ohio Public Health Advisory System. District will follow its COVID-19 reopening plan if Richland County is at Levels One, Two and Three. At Level Four, all schools will be closed and virtual learning will be implemented.

In-class instruction: Five days a week at Levels One, Two and Three. Schools closed at Level Four and all learning becomes virtual three to five days later.

Virtual instruction option: Ontario Local Schools is offering an Ontario Online Academy for all students. Parents should email intent to enroll students into the academy to Mike Ream, director of education, at ream.mike@olsohio.org by Aug. 3. Include name and grade level of each student you wish to enroll. Students enrolled into the academy must complete at least one full semester in the academy before he/she can transition back into “in-person” learning.”

School district: Pioneer Career and Technology Center

Re-open dates: Juniors will start on Monday, Aug. 24. Seniors will start on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

Re-opening plan: Pioneer Career & Technology will strive to have all students in the school for four days per week (excluding scheduled breaks) as long as Richland County is designated at a Level 1 (yellow) or Level 2 (orange) risk level per the Ohio Public Health Advisory System. Click here to read the full reopening plan. 

In-class instruction: Yes. Daily wellness checks of students are required before sending to school. Caregivers are asked to pay close attention and err on the side of caution if their student exhibits any symptoms consistent with COVID-19. 

Virtual instruction option: Yes; Pioneer Online Academy. Online students will participate in both academic and career-technical courses in a fully online environment. These rigorous courses are best suited for students who enjoy working independently and at their own pace. They are monitored and supported by Pioneer’s outstanding staff. Students must commit to one full semester.

Re-opening plan: RSAA will implement a hybrid plan to start the school year, with in-person instruction two days a week and three days remote.

In-class instruction: In the hybrid plan, one group will be face-to-face Monday and Thursday. The second group will be face-to-face Tuesday and Friday.

Virtual instruction option: Wednesdays will be remote learning but will be used to help individual students.

Virtual instruction option: Yes. Students who opt for online learning through Whippet Academy will have their first day of instruction on Aug. 31. Students will stick to online learning for at least one semester.

School district: Temple Christian School

Re-open date(s):  1st through 12th grade begins Aug. 31; K3-K5 students begin Sept. 8

Re-opening plan: In-class, five days a week, unless Richland County moves to Level Four (purple) on statewide Public Health Advisory System. Temple Christian will follow state mandates requiring masks for all staff and students K-12.

In-class instruction: In-person, 5-day-a-week instruction. "Smaller class sizes combined with our families transporting students to and from school, allows us to socially distance students in a very manageable way," said Principal Jessica Day.

Virtual instruction option: Temple Christian School will transition to distance learning if Richland County becomes Level Four (purple).
