Forestry Contest

BUCYRUS – High school students gathered Wednesday, September 11th at Camp Michael for the Crawford Soil and Water Conservation District’s Forestry Contest.

Ten schools competed: Buckeye Central, Colonel Crawford, Firelands, Lucas, Monroeville, Plymouth, South Central, Western Reserve, Willard and Wynford.

The day began with educational sessions on general forestry and tree identification led by Steve McGinnis and Andy Sabola, ODNR Division of Forestry, timber cruising led by Tyler Pope and Mike Hoffman, Vocational Ag teachers and chain saw parts and troubleshooting led by Mark Starkey, Vocational Ag teacher.

Each student was individually tested in their knowledge of timber cruising, tree identification, general forestry, chain saw parts and troubleshooting.

The top school honors went to Wynford High School which had the highest average score. Second place was awarded to Western Reserve, third was Firelands and fourth was Lucas. The top four individuals were: 1st place Alex Lawson – Colonel Crawford, 2nd place Lane Wetzel – Western Reserve, 3rd place James Mc Curry – Wynford and 4th place Harley Johnson – Western Reserve.
