GALION -- The Crawford Park District has organized a number of events for September from tagging butterlfies and canoeing to a fireside chat with Johnny Appleseed.

What: Monarch Tagging

When: Friday, Sept. 11 at 5:30 p.m.

Where: Buckeye Central Outdoor Learning Lab, 938 Kibler St., New Washington

The Crawford Park District will be offering a program to help you learn about Monarch Butterflies. Learn about the life cycle of the Monarch butterfly, its need for milkweed plants, and their amazing migration to Mexico. You will have an opportunity to help Kansas University with Monarch migration and population research by attempting to capture, tag, and release Monarch butterflies. All ages welcome. Nets will be provided. Please call the Crawford Park District at 419-683-9000 to reserve a spot.

The Monarch butterfly is undergoing a population decline.

What: Nature at Night: Caterpillars Aglow

When: Saturday, Sept. 12 at 8:30 p.m.

Where: Lowe-Volk Park, 2401 State Route 598

Did you know that some caterpillars glow under UV light? Join Crawford Park District Naturalists Abby and Chelsea for a night hike to search for those bioluminescent larvae and their adult moths. All ages are welcome; however, a night hike can be intimidating for younger audiences. Call the Crawford Park District at 419-683-9000 to reserve a spot.

What: Canoeing

When: Monday, Sept. 14 at 5:30 p.m.

Where: Neff Reservoir, State Route 98

Join the Crawford Park District Naturalists for an evening paddle around the Neff Reservoir. After a lesson on canoeing basics and safety, we will take to the water. You will need to wear shoes that can get wet. Please call the Crawford Park District at 419-683-9000 to reserve a spot.

What: Fireside with Johnny Appleseed

When: Friday, Sept. 18 7:30 p.m.

Where: Unger Park, 1303 Bucyrus-Nevada Rd.

The Crawford Park District invites families to enjoy a peaceful evening around a campfire while listening to John Chapman tell his tale. Better known as Johnny Appleseed, Chapman traveled from Massachusetts to Indiana, spreading “the good news," all the while making sure early pioneers had a valuable resource: apples.
