MANSFIELD — The Crawford County Board of Developmental Disabilities partnered with North Central State College to offer LPN nursing students from NCSC an opportunity to experience various nursing-related responsibilities in the field of developmental disabilities.

Students observed Fairway Preschool and various adult programs supporting individuals with developmental disabilities during the months of January and February. This partnership included observation, program overviews, awareness, and job related opportunities in the field of developmental disabilities.

The nursing students learned about delegated nursing and the responsibilities of overseeing a program that allows staff to pass medication under the direction of a Registered Nurse.

Fairway Preschool specializes in serving both typically developing and special needs students. The nursing students learned preschool regulations related to nursing and Step-Up To Quality standards, along with the regulations of an all-day preschool.

The NCSC students saw that each classroom at Fairway Preschool has a teacher and an assistant; as well as additional staff for some students, to assist them through the day. They observed medication pass and various challenges of nursing duties related in a preschool.

Fairway Preschool offers Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Therapy, along with nursing services. The students observed how all these medical related services interact to support preschool children with special needs, during a typical day at preschool.

Crawford County Board of Developmental Disabilities said it was pleased with the partnership with North Central State College and hopes that the students’ experiences while here will help their growth as a nurse, as well as expand future job opportunities in the field. CCBDD looks forward to continuing a partnership with the North Central State nursing students in the future.

This community partnership brings learning and awareness to nursing students at NCSC, providing a better understanding of the programs and services provided by boards of developmental disabilities.

Fairway Preschool will be holding an open house March 20. The public is invited to also come and view the school, and see the preschool students participate in activities that make learning fun at Fairway.

Tours will be conducted at 10 am., 11 a.m. and noon.

The Crawford County Board of Developmental Disabilities 1630 E. Southern Ave. Suite 101, Bucyrus, Ohio 44820 serves and supports over 350 children and adults at through the county, Fairway Preschool, public schools, and private providers.
