BUCYRUS — Murder charges have been filed against a Bucyrus man for the death of his roommate, according to a joint press release Friday from Crawford County Prosecutor Matthew Crall and Bucyrus police Chief Neil Assenheimer.

Brian A. Russell, 28, is expected to make an initial appearance Friday afternoon before Crawford County Municipal Court Judge Shane Leuthold, according to Crall.

“There may be additional charges when the case goes before the grand jury,” the prosecutor said.

Russell remains in the Crawford County Jail, according to Crall, who said the name of the victim is being withheld until next of kin is notified.

The prosecutor said Bucyrus police went to 240 W. Mansfield St., Apt. 4, on Thursday at 9 a.m. to check on the well-being of an individual. He said police were called by someone who said the deceased had not been seen lately.

“They did not receive an answer at the door and the door was forced open,” the press release said. “Once inside, officers discovered the body of a 53-year-old male.”

EMS personnel were on the scene and pronounced the man dead. Bucyrus police detectives and the Crawford County coroner were summoned to the scene, also.

During their investigation, police learned Russell lived in the apartment with the deceased. He was located, taken to the police station and questioned.

“Russell was later taken to the Crawford County Jail and held for investigation in the death,” the press release said. “Later in the evening (Thursday), Russell confessed to assaulting the (deceased male) on April 20.”
