SHELBY ─ Angel Gordan’s new business is more than a coffee shop. It is a place for families.
The entrepreneur opened Ivory Bean Coffee House in downtown Shelby with her mother-in-law, Paula. Gordan, the mother of eight children, said her family is the most important factor in her life. Combining that belief with Gordan’s passion for coffee, the family created a place where customers can play games and have a good time with their loved ones.
“We've had a lot of people meet here to catch up with old friends. I've had women sit here for hours, just catching up with people they haven't seen for 20 years," Gordon said. It's really nice because you get to see a little glimpse of people's lives. It just makes you happy."
Her coffee shop is the only one of this type in Shelby. It serves coffee, tea, baked goods and sandwiches. Since opening in November, hot and frozen Ivory Bean Mocha has been the most popular items.
“It's our signature drink. It's like a white mocha with hints of caramel. It's really rich and full-flavored,” Gordan said.
She has highlighted “Angel’s drink of the day” on the shop’s Facebook page to give customers an idea about how to mix up different flavors with their coffee. The raspberry white mocha has been a success.
“It's just kind of letting people know that ‘Hey, if you're tired of the same, old vanilla latte, come in and try this drink.' We have a lot of people who really like to try out the drink of the day,”
Sue Petry became one of the patrons of Ivory Bean. She said she has come to the shop for breakfast on Tuesdays, her shopping days. The coffee is very good and “not expensive at all.”
To provide a safe environment for customers, Gordon said the capacity limit is 35 people. She acknowledged that opening a business amid the pandemic is “very scary.” It took the family about a year to transform the former-office space into a coffee shop. Gordan said they have been in touch with the city and health department to make sure the process works smoothly.
Now, she uses her shop as a platform to promote other local businesses. The Christmas cards, tumblers and mugs sold at the shop are all made by Shelby artists. Prizes for the gift giveaway event on Tuesday were also from local restaurants and salons.
“I feel like it's good to help other small businesses. If we all work together, we can all help each other success,” Gordan said.
Ivory Bean Coffee House is located at 44 E Main Street. It opens from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday, opening from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays.
