ONTARIO ─ Heather Fighter wanted to open an infrared sauna center because she knew it would help people -- just like it helped her.
Fighter had her first infrared sauna in Columbus earlier this year and knew right away she wanted to buy an infrared pod herself.
“It just makes you feel really good after (the session is) over,” she said.
A couple of friends encouraged her to share the fondness with more people. Fighter, a teacher at Pioneer Career and Technology Center in Shelby, took the advice.
“Being a teacher is that you always want to help people. And when I found this and how much it helped me, I knew it would help other people,” she said.
The business, Mind, Pod & Soul, has been open at Richland Mall since late-October. Located at the Wellness Entrepreneurs Center, Fighter said customers have been coming to relieve muscle tension and soreness from workouts or loosen their muscles before having a massage.
She also said their infrared pod is the first one of its kind in the area. A user will lie on the complete chamber to take the infrared heat, light and the Himalayan salt breathing treatment.
Fighter said the machine has five temperature settings that can meet everyone’s needs. As it heats up, it also gives customers a gentle vibration massage to help them relax. The lower temperature is good for relaxation and the higher temperature helps weight control or detoxification.
The infrared heat does not damage the skin, Fighter said. But people with epilepsy and active cancer should not take the sauna. Pregnant women and people with cardiovascular conditions should consult their doctors before they use the treatment.
Mind, Pod & Soul is a family business. Fighter owns it wither her two daughters, Morgan and Madeline Baker, who are in their early 20s.
Madeline said she and her sister are really the business partners of her mom. Everyone has one third of the ownership.
“If we disagreed, we have a two-to-one vote,” Morgan joked.
She also designed the logo and all the promotion materials for the business. She said she was thrilled to run the infrared sauna center with her mother because she is her role model.
“They are my everything. We always have been together and counted on each other. And I want to share everything that I have with them. They're my entire world,” Fighter said of sharing the ownership.
She also said they are offering a special discount. A 20-minute session costs only $25 now instead of $59. There are multiple package specials as well. People can purchase the sessions and make an appointment online.
The opening hours of Mind, Pod & Soul are 4 to 8 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturdays. It is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
