The Cup & Cone Cafe celebrated the grand opening of its 309 E. Main St. location Wednesday.

LEXINGTON -- Lexington’s newest coffee and ice cream shop celebrated its grand opening Wednesday with an afternoon ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Ontario resident and owner, Sheri Johnson, helped her 2-year-old grandson, Ricky, hoist a giant pair of scissors to slice a bright, red ribbon in half, symbolizing the shop’s beginning at 309 E. Main St.

As local public officials complimented Ricky for his success (in maneuvering the large scissors), Johnson stood nearby, beaming. This was everything she imagined when she set out to open the Cup & Cone Cafe with her husband, Brian.

“This is a place for family because we love family, and wanted to do this for them,” she said.

She and Brian have 10 children and a handful of grandchildren. A shop selling a mix of ice cream and coffee, it was something everyone could agree on that brings them all together.

“My husband and I both like ice cream year round,” Johnson said. “He travels a lot for his work and we wanted to have something here to do together, and then we want to pass them on to our children.”

The Cup and Cone Cafe’s menu features both hard and soft serve ice cream, drip coffee and a mix of grab-and-go items for breakfast and lunch.

“My husband likes coffee more than I do,” Johnson said.

He played a role in picking coffee while she occupied herself taste-testing ice creams. She chose Johnson’s Real Ice Cream of Bexley, Ohio

“It’s the best,” Johnson said. “Of course I liked the name, but I tried lots of ice cream and kept coming back to this one.”

The hours at Cup and Cone are from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Thursday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from noon to 9 p.m. Sunday.
