Then & Now: Main Street at Third 1949

Crossing Third Street 1949

Most of the parking lots in downtown Mansfield have been in the cityscape for so long it’s hard to imagine there was a time when it was really difficult to find a place to put your car if you were shopping. This photo was taken when all the Department Stores were within a block of Main Street.

Here at the corner of Main and Third is the M. O’neil Department Store, and across the street are a whole sequence of storefronts that today comprise the Municipal Parking Lot. This photo was taken to document an experimental crosswalk-monitoring device created by the Boy Scouts to help little old ladies get across the street safely.
