The Phoenix Brewing Co. came to life in 2014 on North Diamond Street in a poetic rebirth of an old building that has, for a generation at least, appeared to be doomed.

Empty and crumbling for years, the old Schroer building found new life exactly a century after the first time it opened in 1914.

For many generations, starting in 1880, Schroer’s was known in Mansfield as a successful furniture store. As was common in those days, the furniture business was where coffins came from, and consequently many furniture dealers ended up in the funeral business as well.

Today the old place in its new life hosts much livelier spirits.
