Byron D. Smith, 78, of Galion died Tuesday, September 1, 2015 at home.

Born September 1, 1937 in Galion, he was the son of William F. and Muriel (Wilt) Smith. He married Karen A. (Crall) Smith on April 2, 1961 and she survives.

He was a graduate of North Robinson High School in 1955 and served in the United States Army. Byron was an active member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in North Robinson. He worked in maintenance for 15 years at Timken Roller Bearing in Bucyrus, later became a full time farmer and also sold real estate for 20 years. Byron previously served on the boards of North Robinson Equity, Country Star Co-Op and Producers Livestock Association. He volunteered for Meals on Wheels, enjoyed fishing at his pond, traveling, playing cards and spending time with his granddaughter.

In addition to his wife he is survived by daughters Penne L. Smith of New Marshfield, Connie L. Smith of Albion, Mich. and Roberta “Bobbie” L. (Douglas) Shawhan of Cincinnati; granddaughter Darby G. Shawhan of Cincinnati; sister Judy Strigel of Florida; sister-in-law Carla Sauselen of Bucyrus and nieces and nephews Angela Houseburg, Rick Houseburg, Autumn Cramer, Sonya Coffman and Tonya Lohr.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by nephew Chris Kline.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday, September 4, 2015 at Richardson Davis Chapel of Snyder Funeral Homes, 218 South Market St., Galion, Ohio 44833 where services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, September 5 with Rev. Jarrod Schaaf officiating. Burial will follow in Campbell Cemetery.

Full military honors will be conducted by the United States Army and Galion Crestline Veterans Military Funeral Detail.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Byron Smith Memorial Scholarship Fund for Colonel Crawford Schools or Muscular Dystrophy Association in care of the funeral home.
