The country was hurting in the 1930s, and it wasn’t just the economy that was wounded. The very earth and fields, upon which American agriculture depended, had reached a point of dangerous depletion through generations of careless exploitation.

Erosion control at the DAR plantation

In the late 30s the President asked US organizations of all sizes to make a concerted effort to re-forest the nation. In 1940 the Daughters of the American Revolution committed to establishing pine forests in every state of the union.

The Ohio plantation was established on the edge of the Mohican Memorial State Forest. Paid for by Ohio chapters of the DAR, and planted by local volunteers, the new forest was given a jumpstart of 18,000 white pines covering 34 acres.

The DAR Plantation was dedicated in 1958, and has spent over half a century reaching towering heights to transform the Mohican landscape.
